Greensboro, N.C. – The 12th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team needed a playoff to take top honors at the 18th annual Bryan National Collegiate tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Senior Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.) led the Cavaliers by winning medalist honors.
Virginia and 13th-ranked Wake Forest finished Sunday’s final round tied for first at 36-over 900. Both teams shot 13-over 301 during the final round. The Cavaliers earned the champion’s trophy after winning a playoff that took two holes to decide.
The win was the seventh tournament victory in the program’s history and the second this season. The Cavaliers opened the spring by winning the UCF Challenge. It marked the second time UVa took home top honors from the Bryan National Collegiate. The Cavaliers also won the event in 2013.
The win was the second in Mao’s career. She captured top honors at the UCF Challenge in February of 2013. It was the second time she led the Cavaliers at the Bryan National Collegiate. She was UVa’s top finisher there last season. Her finish was the seventh top-10 outing during her career.
Mao’s win was the third this season by a Cavalier, the first time that has happened in program history. Sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) previously took top honors at the Tar Heel Invitational and the UCF Challenge.
After shooting 70 to open the tournament and following that up with a second-round 74, Mao shot even par 72 during Sunday’s play for a 54-hole total of even par 216. She finished one shot ahead of Auburn’s Kelli Murphy and Wake Forest’s Sierra Sims.
UVa’s second-best finishes were by Diaz-Yi and Lauren Coughlin, who tied for 21st at 12-over 228. Diaz-Yi shot 77 during the final round while Coughlin posted a score of 74.
Junior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) finished in 62nd place at 237 and freshman Lyberty Anderson was 67th at 239. Sarah Kolodzik (Bellbrook, Ohio), competing as a non-scoring individual, placed 71st at 240.
The Bryan National Collegiate was UVa’s final regular-season event. The Cavaliers will compete at the ACC Championships in Greensboro on April 17-19. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at Sedgefield Country Club.
