CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team split a doubleheader with NC State Saturday afternoon (April 11) at The Park. The Cavaliers (13-32, 4-13 ACC) claimed the first game, 3-2, but the Wolfpack (24-16, 8-6 ACC) took the second, 8-0 in five innings.
In the seventh inning of the first game with the score tied, 2-2, freshman Brittany McNulla (Litchfield, N.H.) led off with a single and was pinch run for by junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Chapdelaine moved to third on a one-out double by Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) and after a strikeout, came home on a passed ball to give the Cavaliers the 3-2 win.
Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched a complete game for the win (8-16), allowing two runs and tying her season-high with eight strikeouts.
“Andie did a great job of keeping the ball down the whole game and our batters did a good job of getting hits when we needed them,” UVa head coach Blake Miller said.
The Cavaliers scored their other two runs on a first-inning solo home run by sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.), her second of the season, and a Davis third-inning single that scored McNulla.
Emily Weiman (19-11) took the loss for NC State, striking out seven in 6.2 innings with three runs (two earned) allowed.
In the second game, the Wolfpack hit four home runs in an eight-run third inning en route to an 8-0 five-inning win. Weiman picked up the win, allowing one hit in five innings with four strikeouts.
Freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) took the loss for UVa (3-11), allowing eight runs in 2.2 innings. Chapdelaine came on and allowed no runs in 2.1 innings of relief.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday with first pitch scheduled for noon. Before the game, the Cavaliers will honor their two seniors, Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.), in a pregame ceremony.
