LYNCHBURG, Va.–The Virginia softball team split a pair of games at Liberty Wednesday afternoon at Liberty Softball Stadium. The Cavaliers (16-37) won the second game, 4-2, after dropping the first game, 3-2, to the Flames (27-25).
In the second game, junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw a complete game and freshman Brittany McNulla (Litchfield, N.H.) hit a pair of doubles and scored two runs in a 4-1 Cavalier victory.
Chapdelaine (5-4) threw a complete game with two runs allowed (one earned) and six strikeouts to earn the win. She also helped herself at the plate, scoring a run as well as driving in McNulla in the fifth.
“Aimee did a good job of getting ahead of hitters in both games and then came up with a big hit at the plate in the second game,” UVa head coach Blake Miller said.
Up 1-0 in the fourth, senior Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.) singled home Chapdelaine before scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.).
Abby Tincher (2-6) took the loss for Liberty, allowing four runs in 4.1 innings.
Freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) led off the first game with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.). After Liberty took the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the first, Hughes led off the third with a solo home run to right-center field to tie the game, 2-2. It was Hughes’ fifth home run of the season.
In the bottom of the sixth, Liberty’s Blair Lawrence advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball to give the Flames a 3-2 lead.
Chapdelaine pitched 5.1 innings of relief with six strikeouts and only the one unearned run in the loss (4-4). Chandler Ball (19-8) threw a complete game with two runs allowed to earn the win for Liberty.
Next up, the Cavaliers travel to Syracuse, N.Y., this weekend (April 25-26) for a three-game series at Syracuse to conclude the regular season.
