WACO, Texas – Virginia women’s tennis standouts Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) won their opening matches at the 2015 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday (May 20) at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Defending NCAA singles champion Collins, who is seeded No. 9-16 in the championship, defeated 19th-ranked Taylor Davidson of Stanford 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round of 64. Collins (24-5) has won 14 consecutive singles matches and will play Michigan’s Ronit Yurovsky in the round of 32 on Thursday (May 21).
No. 6 seed Elbaba (30-5) defeated 27th-ranked Emina Bektas of Michigan 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the opening round and will play 21st-ranked Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA in the round of 32 tomorrow.
Junior captain Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) also competed in the round of 64 for the second consecutive season, but lost 6-1, 6-3 to No. 1 seed and top-ranked Robin Anderson of UCLA. Nauta finished the season with a 31-15 singles record.
