GOLD RIVER, Calif.–The Virginia rowing team advanced two boats to the grand finals on the second day of the NCAA Championships Saturday (May 30) on Lake Natoma.

“What we talk about as a program is taking a big step forward on the first day of heats and then continuing with a second big step on the second day in the semis and our Varsity Eight and Varsity Four were able to do just that,” UVa assistant coach Josh Gautreau said. “The V8 stepped up in a really big way against a Cal team that has not been pushed all season and (we) still have room to improve tomorrow, while the V4 was able to hang with an undefeated Brown crew and push through at the end of the race and win going away. Plus, I think the Second Varsity Eight is strong and tough group and they are going to bounce back and give everything they have in the B final.”

The UVa Varsity Eight advanced to the grand final Sunday with a second-place finish its semifinal to California, 6:27.366-6:29.464. Texas was third in 6:34.356, followed by Michigan, Washington State and Indiana.

In the Varsity Four semis, Virginia staying within a second of Brown throughout the first 1,000 meters before making a strong move and going on to win, 7:21.652-7:24.59, and clinch a grand final berth. Washington was third in 7:26.777, followed by Washington State, Stanford and Texas.

UVa’s Second Varsity Eight placed fifth in its semifinal in 6:45.922, behind Brown (6:32.344), Yale (6:36.730), Washington State (6:36.842) and Stanford (6:36.987). Indiana was sixth in 6:49.964.

The Cavaliers’ Varsity Eight and Varsity Four will compete for national titles in grand finals (places 1-6) Sunday with the V4 race taking place at 11:12 a.m. and the V8 race going off at noon. The UVa 2V8 will compete in the B final (places 7-12) at 11:24 a.m. All times EST.
