McCarthy Finishes 29th at NCAA Golf Championships

Bradenton, Fla. – Virginia senior men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) wrapped up his collegiate career by tying for 29th at the NCAA Championships after qualifying as one of nine individual competitors for Monday’s final round of stroke play.
The No. 25 Cavaliers finished 18th in the team competition, but were not one of the top 15 teams to advance to Monday’s fourth round where the top eight teams advanced to the match play portion of the tournament. Virginia finished its 54 holes of play at 29-over 893, missing the playoff for 15th place by three strokes.
McCarthy posted rounds of 76, 69, 73 and 75 at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. It marked the fourth time he has competed at the NCAA Championships. He was sixth last season and placed 22nd as a sophomore.
After the third round, UVa sophomore Jimmy Stanger finished 51st at 6-over 222, sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 69th at 224. Senior Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.) finished 104th at 230 and junior Kyle Kochevar was 14th at 239.
The NCAA individual champion was SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau, who finished at 8-under 280. The eight teams to qualify for match play were Illinois (1155), Vanderbilt (1157), Georgia (1158), Texas (1158), USC (1161), South Florida (1168), LSU (1169) and UCLA (1172).
Match play quarterfinals and semifinals take place Tuesday with the finals set for Monday.
