Sugar Grove, Ill. – The Virginia men’s golf team opened its season with a fifth-place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The Cavaliers finished at 32-over 896 after posting rounds of 304 (+16), 298 (+10) and 294 (+6). Illinois captured the team title at 7-under 857.
Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) led Virginia by finishing sixth at 2-over 218. He had rounds of 70, 72 and 76. It was the second top-10 finish of his career. He placed 30th at the event last year.
Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 22nd overall at 225. After opening with an 8-over 80, he bounced back to shoot a combined 1-over for his final 36 holes. Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) was 29th at 227 and Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) was 38th at 229. McLaughlin posted UVa’s lowest final round score, shooting 1-under 71. It was McLaughlin’s first tournament since last October. He did not compete for UVa in the spring due to an injury.
Freshman Ashton Poole (Charlotte) placed 66th in his collegiate debut. He finished at 23-over 239.
“It was not our best week but with a young team on a championship venue, it was nice to see our guys respond in the final round,” said head coach Bowen Sargent. “It was great to see Danny Walker have a good look at winning so it’s nice to see one of our young guys step up. With the NCAA Championships scheduled to be played here in two years, this was great preparation for Derek, Jimmy, Danny and Ashton.”
Houston’s Vincent Martino took medalist honors at 3-under 213.
Virginia returns to tournament action Sept. 25-27 for the DICK’S Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup Challenge at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
