All-UVa Doubles Final Set in UVa Ranked 1+1 Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five Virginia men’s tennis players earned singles victories and had two doubles teams advance to the finals during the first day’s action at the 10th Annual UVa Ranked 1+1 Tournament, being held Friday, Sept. 18 through Sunday, Sept. 20 at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Va.
The tournament consists of two 16-player singles draws, the orange bracket and the blue bracket, and two eight-team doubles draw. All matches at the tournament will be played with no-ad scoring, with doubles consisting of an eight-game pro set and singles played in a best-of-three sets format.
Junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.), No. 8 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, the top seed in the Blue singles bracket, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 singles win over Kentucky’s Austin Hussey. Also in the Blue bracket, junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) downed UNF’s Julian Bradley 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 and sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) defeated Penn State’s Aws Laaribi 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2). Junior Harrison Richmond (Pawley’s Island, S.C.) moved into the consolation side of the Blue bracket after falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 to UNF’s Yannick Zuern.
In the Orange singles bracket, senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over VCU’s Louis Ishizaka and sophomore Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) downed UNF’s Jonathan Deautriell 6-3, 6-1. Senior Jonathan Cornish (London, England) fell 6-2, 6-2 to Penn State’s Matt Berry.
In doubles, tomorrow morning’s orange bracket championship match will feature Virginia’s Styslinger and Kwiatkowski against their teammates Wiersholm and Aragone. Styslinger/Kwiatkowski, the top-seeded doubles team in the Orange bracket, had a first-round bye and then defeated UNF’s Jonathan Deautriell/Julian Bradley 8-1 to advance to the final. Wiersholm/Aragone downed Penn State’s Aws Laarib/Matt Bradley 8-6 in the opening round and Kentucky’s Austin Hussey/Trey Yates 8-4 in the second round. Richmond/Cornish fell 8-6 in the second round of the Blue bracket to ETSU’s David Biosca/Rogerio Ribiero after winning their first match 8-6 over VCU’s Catalin Fifea/Louis Ishizaka.
Saturday’s action starts at 10 a.m. with the final round of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles. The final round of singles will be on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.
