Cavaliers Complete Day One Of Fall Competition

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) advanced on day one of action at the Oracle/ITA Masters Tournament to lead a full day of action for the Virginia women’s tennis team on Friday.
Collins, who is competing on the west coast in the ITA event, advanced with a straight0set win of 6-1, 6-0 over Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M. She will now face Sinead Lohan of Miami at 12:30 p.m. PT on Saturday.
Several members of the Cavalier’s squad also opened fall competition at the Duke Bonk Invitational on Friday, competing at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C.
Senior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) and freshman Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) both advanced in the White bracket at the Bonk Invitational with three-set victories. Morton defeated Jessie Aney of North Carolina 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 to advance on her side of the bracket, while Susi defeated Bianca Moldovan of NC State 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Both will play in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Morton will face Anna Danilina of Florida, while Susi will face Kaitlyn McCarthy of Duke.
Freshman Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) advanced to the semifinals of the Blue bracket with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Carolina Wegner of TCU. She will face Brianna Morgan of Florida at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) fell to Belinda Woolcock of Florida 7-5, 6-3 and will play in the consolation bracket against Rebecca Smaller of Duke at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
Junior Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell to North Carolina’s Chloe Oullet-Pizer by a score of 6-4, 7-5 and will face NC State’s Joanna Nalborska at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in the consolation bracket. Sophomore Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) did not play due to injury.
In doubles play, the Cavaliers saw an 8-4 win from the pairing of Kelley and Morton over Barbara Mancera and Amanda Bebol of NC State. The duo will face Johnise Renaud of Georgia Tech and Maggie Kane of North Carolina on Saturday.
The pairing of Epstein and Mercer fell 8-1 to Florida’s Woolcock and Kourtney Keegan, while Olivarez and Susi fell to the Duke team of Beatrice Capra and Ellyse Hamlin 8-0. Olivarez and Susi will face Cassandra Vasquez and Ashley Dai of North Carolina on Saturday.
