UVa Men's Golfers Grab First-Day Lead at DICK's Sports Goods Challenge Cup

Nashville, Tenn. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished the first day of play at the DICK’S Sporting Goods Challenge Cup in first place. The Cavaliers posted rounds of 4-under 280 and 3-under 281 to stand at 7-under 561 after 36 holes of play. Vanderbilt is in second place at 1-under 567. The 12-team event is taking place at the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville.
UVa was led by junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.), who had scores of 67 and 71 to finish the second round tied for third place at 4-under 138. Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) all shot 1-under 141 to be tied for 13th place. Senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) is in 53rd place at 153.
Alabama’s Robby Shelton leads the field at 8-under 134. Florida State’s Hank Lebioda is in second place at 137.
The stroke play portion of the tournament will conclude Saturday. The Conference Challenge will take place on Sunday, with teams from the ACC playing 18-hole matches against their similarly ranked opponent from the SEC. The conference that accumulates the most points on Sunday will be crowned the 2015 Collegiate Challenge Cup Champion.
