Virginia Enjoys Successful First Day At UVa Fall Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – It was a successful first day for the Virginia women’s tennis team on Friday with several players advancing through two rounds in the winner’s bracket at the UVa Fall Invite.

In the Blue flight of the singles draw, senior Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) advanced through two rounds in the winner’s bracket on Friday, setting up a Saturday morning matchup against Cavalier freshman Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) who also picked up a pair of wins on Friday.

Also in the Blue flight, senior Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) picked up a pair of wins to advance in the winner’s bracket, narrowly missing out on a matchup against Cavalier junior Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) on Saturday. Olivarez picked up a first-round win on Saturday, but fell in her second matchup of the afternoon.

In the Orange flight, senior Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) advanced through both rounds with victories, but missed out on a matchup with a teammate as freshman Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) won her first match of the day, but fell in the second round.

Also in the Orange flight, senior Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) picked up a pair of wins on Friday to advance to the semifinals on Saturday. Sophomore Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) dropped both of her matches on the day.

In doubles action, the Cavaliers saw several teams advance with the pairings of Olivarez and Mercer picking up a win in their match, while Epstein and Susi also advanced in the Blue flight.

In the Orange flight of doubles, the pairing of Elbaba and Morton advanced along with the pairing of Collins and Kelley. All four Cavalier squads will play on Saturday afternoon.

The matches are scheduled to be played at the Snyder Tennis Center, but will move indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in the case of inclement weather.
