Johnson City, Tenn. – The 15th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team finished fourth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn. The Cavaliers shot 1-under 287 during Sunday’s final round for a three-day total of even par 864. Penn State captured the team title at 20-under 844.
Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) led the Cavaliers with a fourth-place finish at 5-under 211. Walker shot 2-under 70 on Sunday. It marked the second time in three events this season he has led the team in scoring. Walker has posted a top-10 finish in all three of UVA’s fall events.
Junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 12th overall at 3-under 213. He shot 74 during the final round. Senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) also shot 70 on Sunday and moved up to 42nd place at 6-over 222. Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) tied for 57th at 225. Sophomore Connor Messick (Oak Hill, Va.), who competed as an individual, was 80th at 240.
East Tennessee State’s Adrian Meronk took medalist honors at 7-under 209.
“Danny and Derek had another great week and really carried the team,” said Virginia coach Bowen Sargent. “It’s great to see both playing consistently well from week to week. Fourth year Nick McLaughlin showed a lot of maturity and experience after the first round, responding with two very solid rounds, especially the final round where he shot 70. Heading into next week, we’ll need a better effort from the bottom of our lineup if we are to contend as we did last year. We’ll regroup and be ready to play after a quick turnaround.”
UVA returns to action this week when the Cavaliers compete in the U.S. Collegiate tournament Oct. 16-18.
