Alpharetta, Ga. – A year after shooting 8-under 64 during the final round to win medalist honors at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, Virginia junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) picked up right where he left off in the first round of this year’s tournament. Bard shot 6-under 66 on Friday to hold a two-shot lead on the field after the event’s first round.
Thanks to Bard’s sizzling round, 22nd-ranked UVA finished the opening day of play in second place at 5-under 283. Fourth-ranked Florida State is one shot ahead of the Hoos on the leaderboard.
Bard totaled five birdies, one eagle and one bogey during his round. He won last year’s tournament by shooting 15-under 201, which was the best score in the nine-year history of the event. Bard leads Auburn’s Will Long and Wake Forest Cameron Young by two strokes.
UVA senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) finished the first round in 17th place at 1-under 71 on The Golf Club of Georgia course. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) are tied for 36th at 1-over 73. Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) is in 48th place at 74.
The second round of the U.S. Collegiate Championship will take place Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
