Kiawah Island, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Virginia men’s golf team is tied for second place after the opening 18 holes of play at the Kiawah Classic in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 289 to tie with 33rd-ranked Augusta. Charleston Southern leads the 22-team field at 1-under 287.

Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) posted UVA’s best first-round score shooting 1-under 71 to stand in ninth place. Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) is one shot behind Walsh in 16th place. Three Cavaliers — senior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) and sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) are tied for 28th at 1-over 73.

Three players share the tournament lead at 4-under 68. The group includes R.J. Keur of Charleston Southern, Robin Petersson of Augusta and Nick Brediger of Radford.

The second round of the tournament gets underway Monday at 6:30 a.m. and Tuesday’s final round features a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The event is UVA’s final tournament of the fall.
