Virginia Suffers 3-0 Loss at Miami

MIAMI, Fla. – The Virginia volleyball team fell to Miami, 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17) on Friday night at the James L. Knight Sports Complex.
Virginia (15-9, 7-6 ACC) was out-hit by Miami (17-7, 10-4 ACC), .352-.122 in the match. The Hurricanes also had the edge over the Cavaliers in service aces (6-1), digs (42-35) and blocks (9-3).
Junior Haley Kole led UVA with 11 kills on a .360 hitting percentage. Seniors Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) and Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.), along with freshman Anna Walsh (Grapevine, Texas) each added five kills.
Kole also led the Cavaliers with nine digs and added one block, while Bausback finished eight digs and two blocks.
After trailing 6-1 in the first set, Virginia fought back to cut the lead to two points, 12-10, and eventually tied the set up at 15-15. However, Miami would put together a 5-0 run to hold a 21-16 advantage. The teams traded points down the stretch as the Hurricanes held on to take the set, 25-20.
Miami used a 7-2 run to take a 9-4 lead over Virginia early in the second set. The Cavaliers were unable to come back as the Hurricanes remained in control for the 25-11 win and lead the match 2-0 at the break.
UVA scored the first three points in the third set, but a 6-0 run put Miami in front 6-3. The Hurricanes continued to stretch their lead over the Cavaliers, eventually going up 22-12. Virginia closed the gap with a 4-1 run, but could not overcome the deficit as Miami took the win 25-17.
Virginia closes out its road-stint at No. 17 Florida State on Sunday. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
