CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (9-4) opened the two-day Cavalier Classic Tournament Presented by Holiday Inn University Area with a 75-40 victory over Coppin State (2-9) on Monday (Dec. 28) at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Cavaliers led wire-to-wire, extending its lead to 33 points, 67-34, after opening the fourth quarter with four-straight made threes. UVA held a 45-27 edge in rebounding and limited Coppin to 30.9 percent shooting (17-of-55). Virginia forced 23 turnovers, scoring 28 points off the miscues.
Sophomore Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) started the game making her first seven field goal attempts, finishing the game 7-of-8 shooting with 17 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) scored 16 points with four assists, three rebounds and a steal.
Janelle Lane led Coppin State with 10 points. Omaah Tayong scored eight points with six rebounds.
“We’re just excited to get the win in the first round of the Cavalier Classic,” said Virginia head coach Joanne Boyle. “It feels good to be on the floor again after break. We had good energy out there.”
Virginia will take on Richmond (7-5) in the tournament finale on Tuesday night, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. Richmond won its opening game of the tournament, defeating Lafayette (2-8) 54-46.
The Cavaliers opened the game on an 8-0 run. The Eagles got to within four points, 10-6, with five minutes left in the first quarter, but trailed 19-10 at the end of the quarter. A three-pointer from Venson 1:09 into the second quarter started a 10-0 run that put the Cavaliers in control of the game. UVA outscored Coppin State 20-7 in the second quarter to take a 39-17 lead into the break.
After shooting 8-of-28 in the first half, Coppin rebounded by making 50 percent of its shots (7-of-14) to head into the fourth quarter trailing 55-34. Four-straight three-pointers from Venson, junior Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) and redshirt sophomore J’Kyra Brown (Rocky Mount, N.C.) opened the fourth quarter, extending the UVA lead to 67-34, outscoring the Eagles 20-6 in the fourth quarter.
Senior Faith Randolph (Derwood, Md.) scored nine points with seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. Brown finished with seven points and six rebounds. Sophomore Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) scored nine points with five rebounds.
