It’s been a busy summer for the members of the Virginia men’s tennis team. Between internships, summer school and lots and lots of tennis, here is a brief look at how the reigning National Champions have been spending their “break”.

Altamirano Collin Altamirano Collin opened his summer in early June at a Futures event in Winston-Salem, NC, followed by a terrific performance in reaching the semifinals of the inaugural Charlottesville Futures event. He also played doubles in the Charlottesville event with UVa teammate Luca Corinteli. Then, after spending a few weeks at home, he traveled to Europe for more professional events to augment his tennis growth. He and teammate Thai Kwiatkowski traveled with USTA Collegiate Coach Christian Groh (former coach of Tommy Haas) and playing singles and doubles in Futures and Challenger events mainly in Italy. He is concluding his European swing this week at the Futures event in Appiano, Italy, after which he will return to Charlottesville to gear up for the fall season. ITF Site ATP Site
Aragone J.C. Aragone J.C. studied abroad in Valencia, Spain while training at Tennis Val Academy. He reached the semifinals of a Futures event in Spain in July. Aragone also won a wildcard tournament in California, qualifying him for the Laguna Niguel ITF Futures event in late September. Just this past week he played the Illinois ITF Futures event and lost in the final round of qualifiers. He is currently at home training to continue to prepare for the California tourney and the coming season at UVa. ITF Site ATP Site
Corinteli Luca Corinteli Luca has been in Charlottesville taking summer classes here at UVa while playing Men’s Open events as well as doubles in the Charlottesville Futures event with teammate Collin Altamirano. A large highlight was reaching the semifinals of the Virginia State Clay Court tourney in Richmond, Va. ITF Site ATP Site
Cornish Jonathan Cornish Jonathan is currently doing an internship at the University of Virginia Investment Management Company here in Charlottesville while training for his fourth and final year. ITF Site ATP Site
Kwiatkowski Thai-Son Kwiatkowski Thai-Son, like teammate Collin Altamirano, traveled with USTA Summer Coach Christian Groh playing Futures and Challenger events in and around Italy, and has recently returned home. Kwiatkowski also had the unique opportunity to hit with Marin Cilic, tennis professional currently ranked at a career high of No. 8 in the world. ITF Site ATP Site
Richmond Harrison Richmond Harrison is currently doing an internship at Bessemer Trust in Miami, Fla., a private wealth management firm headquartered in NYC. ITF Site ATP Site
Ritschard Alexander Ritschard Alexander has been spending his summer training back in his hometown of Zurich, Switzerland. ITF Site ATP Site
Shane Ryan Shane Ryan trained at IMG Academy down in Bradenton, FL and is playing in his first of multiple professional events this summer at the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Challenger in Lexington, Ky. He also competed in the qualifying rounds of the Citi Open in Washington, D.C. (Aug. 1-2). Ryan teamed with his brother, Justin, to win the doubles title at the CarX Futures of Champaign (Aug. 13). Ryan also played singles in Champaign, falling in the round of 32. Ryan then played at the ATP Winston-Salem Open, falling in the first round of qualifying.
Ryan is one of eight players who has been granted a Wild Card to play in the main draw of men’s singles at the 2015 US Open. Ryan will find out his first round opponent when the official draws are announced on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Styslinger Mac Styslinger Mac trained at IMG Academy down in Bradenton, Fla., leading up to two professional events in Europe before coming home to begin his summer. ITF Site ATP Site
Wiersholm Henrik Wiersholm Henrik studied abroad in Valencia, Spain while training at Tennis Val Academy. He finished competing in the Kalamazoo National Championships where won his first three singles matches and reached the fourth round in doubles with partner Tommy Paul. ITF Site ATP Site
