Virginia Wins 11 Swimming Events Against Towson, VT

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va.-The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams captured 11 event wins on the first night of a two-day meet against Virginia Tech and Towson Friday evening (Jan. 15) at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The No. 3 Cavalier women won all eight swimming events contested, while the No. 21 Virginia men finished first in three more events.
After one day, the UVA women lead Virginia Tech, 120-47, and Towson, 136-31. The Cavalier men lead the Tigers 130-36, but trail the Hokies, 101-66.
Senior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) was a part in four event wins, claiming the women’s 200-yard IM (2:00.75) and 200 back (1:55.61). She was the anchor on the 200 free relay (1:31.67) with freshman Kasey Schmidt (Saint Augustine, Fla.), junior Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom) and sophomore Caitlin Cooper (Atlanta, Ga.) and led off the winning 400 medley relay (3:38.22) with junior Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), sophomore Jennifer Marrkand (Westport, Mass.) and Thomas.
Thomas captured the 100 free (50.27), Simon won the 100 breast (1:01.55) and Marrkand touched first in the 200 fly (1:58.73). Senior Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) placed first in the 500 free in 4:50.03.
On the men’s side, freshman Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) won the 500 free in 4:29.79, while fellow freshman Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) captured the 200 fly in 1:48.93.
In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay of junior Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), freshman Murat Yildirim (Istanbul, Turkey), Fong and sophomore Nicholas Magana (Scottsdale, Ariz.) touched first in a time of 3:19.21.
The meet concludes Saturday with action set to begin at 11 a.m.
In other action, junior Leah Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is in Austin, Texas, competing at the Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin. She competed in the women’s 400-meter free, placing second in 4:04.74.
