CHRISTIANSBURG, Va.-The Virginia women’s swimming and diving team swept Towson and Virginia Tech, while the men’s team earned a split Saturday (Jan. 16) at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

The No. 3 Virginia women (6-0) defeated Virginia Tech (9-3), 258-95, and Towson (5-4), 289-64, while the No. 21 Cavalier men (3-3) took down the Tigers (5-3), 285-66, but fell to the Hokies (11-0), 212.5-140.5.

“We had a lot of strong performances this weekend, but also had some we wish we had back,” UVA head coach Augie Busch. “We’re pretty tired right now due to the culmination of many different training factors which is certainly why you saw several swims slower than last weekend. However, our men and women showed a lot of fight, particularly on relays where it’s most important, and they continue to show terrific energy and support for each other, of which I’m very proud. It is back to work Monday as we approach our meets against two more outstanding opponents in NC State and UNC.”

The Cavaliers swept the 1,000-yard free, with senior Hanne Borgersen (Frederick, Md.) claiming the women’s race in 10:00.21 and freshman Sam Magnan (Bethlehem, Pa.) winning the men’s race in 9:22.47.

UVA also swept the 100 back with senior Courtney Bartholomew (Holland, Mich.) and junior Austin Quinn (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) winning the women’s (53.60) and the men’s (49.85) races.

Sophomore Jennifer Marrkand (Westport, Mass.) was a two-event winner in the 100 fly in 54.85 and the 400 IM in 4:22.84.

Other women’s winners were junior Ellen Thomas (Guildford, United Kingdom) in the 50 free in 23.40 and freshman Megan Moroney (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) in the 200 free in 1:48.55.

The women’s 200 medley relay of Bartholomew, junior Laura Simon (Simmern, Germany), Thomas and sophomore Caitlin Cooper (Atlanta, Ga.) touched first in 1:40.09, while the 400 free relay of Moroney, freshman Eryn Eddy (Loveland, Colo.), Bartholomew and Thomas won in a time of 3:21.56.

UVA’s men placed second in both relays Saturday, with the 200 medley relay of Quinn, freshmen Murat Yildirim (Istanbul, Turkey) and Zach Fong (Moorestown, N.J.) and junior Matt Lockman (Charlottesville, Va.) finishing in a time of 1:30.44, while the 400 free relay of Quinn, sophomores Nicholas Magana (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Luke Georgiadis (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Lockman clocked a time of 3:01.44.

In diving action on Friday, senior Becca Corbett (Louisville, Ky.) won the women’s 3-meter event with a score of 299.60, while fellow senior Katie Warburg (Wilton, Conn.) finished third with a mark of 285.35. Corbett also placed second on the 1-meter boards with a score of 264.95.

The Cavaliers are in action next weekend as UVA competes at NC State on Friday (Jan. 22) and North Carolina next Saturday (Jan. 23).
