CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia picked up its third consecutive win to start the spring season as the eighth-ranked Cavaliers (3-0) defeated No. 56 Columbia (0-2) by a score of 6-1 at the ITA Kickoff weekend on Saturday (Jan. 23).
With the win, the Cavaliers advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin the weekend of Feb. 5-8.
The Cavaliers grabbed singles victories from No. 4 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), No. 8 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), No. 32 Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.), Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) on the way to the win.
Virginia picked up the doubles point with a pair of quick victories on courts one and two. The pairing of Elbaba and Morton won the first match 6-2 on court two, while the No. 19 duo of Collins and Kelley won 6-2 moments later on court one.
After securing the doubles point, Morton extended the lead for the Cavaliers when she posted a 6-2, 6-3 win on court three. Elbaba secured a third point for Virginia moments later as she won 6-1, 6-4 on court three.
The freshman, Kelley, clinched the win on court six when she fought back in the second set to grab a 6-2, 6-4 win and lock up the victory. Collins followed with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 win on court one just minutes after Kelley’s win to give Virginia the 5-0 lead in the dual meet.
Columbia picked up its one point of the afternoon as Alexandra Solyovev defeated No. 30 Stephanie Nauta 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 on court four.
Olivarez closed out the match on court five, fighting back in the second set to even the match before claiming the victory in a super tiebreak. Olivarez won 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (9) as the Cavaliers grabbed the 6-1 win over the Lions.
Virginia will return to action on Friday, Jan. 29, when the Cavaliers host No. 28 South Carolina at 4 p.m.
