Virginia Falls To San Jose State To Close Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – Seven unearned runs in the first inning proved to be too much to overcome on Saturday as Virginia (2-3) fell to San Jose State (1-4) by a score of 10-1 in six innings to close play at the Kajikawa Classic.
Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) moved to 2-2 on the season as she took the loss in the circle, allowing 10 runs – three of them earned – on 12 hits through 6.0 innings of work. She walked one and struck out three.
The Cavaliers found themselves in a hole before the first at bat as San Jose State capitalized on three errors early in the first inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Virginia got on the board in the third when Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) scored from third on a single to right from Danni Ingraham (Laguna Nigel, Calif.). Hughes reached on a bunt single and took second on a throwing error. She then advanced to third on a groundout to set up the score on the Ingraham hit.
San Jose State got the run back in the fourth with an RBI single from Alyssa Martinez. Jessie Hufstetler scored from second on the play. Hufstetler reached on a single to left then was awarded second when Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) caught a fly ball and knocked down the temporary fencing in center field. It set up the score on the Martinez hit that put the Spartans on top 8-1.
The Spartans added another two runs in the sixth inning to push the score out to the final 10-1 margin of victory.
Virginia will return to action next weekend, continuing tournament play on the road with five games at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, Texas. The Cavaliers will face Tulsa, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, North Dakota and play two games against UTSA.
