Stanger's 70 Leads UVA at Burns Intercollegiate

Lihu’e, Kaua’i, Hawaii – The 14th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team is tied for ninth place after the opening round at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Kaua’i, Hawaii. The Cavaliers shot 8-over 296 during their first spring tournament. Texas leads the 16-team field at 12-under 276 as three Longhorn players shot 69 or better.
Junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) led Virginia during the opening round by shooting 2-under 70 to finish the day in fifth place. Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot 73 and is in 26th position. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is 34th at 74. Junior Derek Bard carded a round of 79 and is in 81st place while senior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) is 96th after shooting 83.
Texas standout Beau Hossler grabbed the early lead in stroke play by shooting 5-under 67.
The 54-hole tournament at Wailua Golf Course runs through Friday.
