GREENVILLE, S.C. – Virginia (5-9) split a pair of games on Saturday at the Spartan Classic, using a rally in game one to pick up a win over La Salle before falling in a walk-off to Ohio to close the day.
The Cavaliers used multiple-RBI performances from Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) to grab the win over La Salle (0-4). Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the second game, but the seventh-inning rally by Ohio (6-2) ended Virginia’s hopes of a sweep on the day.
Virginia will return to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 28) closing out the Spartan Classic at Pepsi Stadium against Furman.
Game 1
Virginia 6, La Salle 3
The Cavaliers got a four-RBI performance from Park and two RBI from Hughes in game one of the afternoon to rally for a 6-3 win over La Salle.
Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) picked up the win for the Cavaliers to move to 1-1 on the season. Davis worked 6.0 scoreless innings in relief against the Explorers. She allowed five hits and struck out one.
Virginia got off to a quick start, using a walk and a stolen base from Hughes to set up an RBI double from Park that started the scoring.
La Salle answered in the home half, coming up with a two-out RBI single up the middle to bring home its first run of the game and tie things up.
Hughes put the Cavaliers back in front in the second inning, delivering an RBI single with a ball back up the middle that clipped the pitcher, allowing Lauren Heintzelman (Southlake, Texas) to score from third. Virginia led 2-1 heading to the home half of the inning.
The Explorers loaded the bases in the second inning and Virginia called Davis to the circle from the outfield. A fielder’s choice tied the game as the Cavaliers traded a run for an out and left runners at the corners. A sac fly then gave La Salle the lead before Virginia would get out of the inning down 3-2.
Park then came up with a big hit again in the fourth, delivering a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Cavaliers back in front 4-3.
A walk of Allie Arneson (Aledo, Texas) started a rally in the sixth inning before back-to-back hits from Hughes and Park brought two runs home. The triple from Hughes and single from Park put Virginia on top 6-3.
The Cavaliers then held things in check the rest of the way to pick up the win over the Explorers.
Game 2
Ohio, Virginia
It came down to the last at bat in the second game of the day as Ohio picked up a 3-2 walk-off win over the Cavaliers to close day two at the Spartan Classic.
Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) suffered the loss to fall to 3-7 on the season. She allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Fitzgerald hit her two-run shot in the fourth inning to put the Cavaliers on the board. Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored on the play after pinch running for Park who reached on a double in the previous at bat. The Fitzgerald hit gave Virginia the 2-0 lead.
Ohio got a run back in the home half of the inning as the Cavaliers traded a run for an out. A single and a groundout put a Bobcat in scoring position before she took third on a wild pitch. She then crossed the plate a batter later as Virginia went for the sure out at first on a grounder and notched the second out. The Cavaliers retired the next batter to get out of the inning with the 2-1 lead.
The sixth inning saw the Bobcats make a move on the Cavaliers. Following a leadoff single, Ohio went first to third on a sac bunt to get the tying run in scoring position. A fielding error on a fly ball to right field tied the game and left a runner on third with one out.
The Cavaliers responded with a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning tied 2-2 with the Bobcats.
Ohio grabbed the win in the seventh, using a pair of stolen bases following a leadoff hit to put a runner on third. An infield single on a ball that dropped and died in a slow roll off the bat allowed the winning run to come home as the Bobcats picked up the walk-off win.
