Final Brackets

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – George DiCamillo (Highland Heights, Ohio) claimed his third ACC Championship on Sunday, becoming only the seventh Cavalier wrestler to win three as he led Virginia at the ACC Wrestling Championships.

Virginia had four wrestlers place in the event. Nick Herrmann (Amarillo, Texas) finished third at 125 pounds, Chris Yankowich (Norristown, Pa.) finished third at 149 pounds and Tyler Askey (Newnan, Ga.) finished third at 174 pounds.

Three Cavaliers earned automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of their finish at the ACC Championships. DiCamillo, Herrmann and Zach Nye (Enola, Pa.) all qualified for the event that will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York. Nye finished fourth at 197 pounds.

The NCAA Championships will be held March 17-19.

“We’re so excited for George (DiCamillo) and I’m glad our younger wrestlers got to watch that and see what we want our wrestlers to be,” said Virginia head coach Steve Garland. “It made my year to see the comeback George put together in his first match.

“We had some other great performances with Nick (Herrmann) taking third. Chris (Yankowich) was the talk of the tournament for our fans. What a great day for him to finish third after spending four years working so hard. Tyler (Askey) looked like he turned the corner and we’re excited to see where he goes from here.”

Askey and Yankowich did not claim automatic bids despite placing at the event as the ACC only received two automatic qualifiers at 149 and 174 pounds. Both could be selected as at-large participants for the NCAA Tournament.

“Now we shift gears and focus,” Garland said. “Hopefully we’ll have some more guys selected beyond the ones who got automatic bids. We have to shift focus to those guys and getting them on the podium at NCAAs, but also focusing on the guys who don’t make it and working with them on the things we need to do in order to get them there on that podium next year.”

Virginia finished fourth in the ACC Championships with 44.0 points. NC State claimed the ACC Championship with 90.0 points.
