Hoos Finish First Day at Palmetto Invitational in Second Place

Aiken, S.C. – The No. 26 Virginia men’s golf team is in second place following the opening two rounds of play at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invite in Aiken, S.C. The Cavaliers posted rounds of 3-over 283 and 7-under 273 for a first-day total of 4-under 556. South Carolina leads the 18-team field at 18-under 542.

UVA was led by junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), who is tied for third at 4-under 136. Bard had rounds of 1-over 71 and 5-under 65 at the Palmetto Golf Club. His second round score featured seven birdies and two bogeys. Bard was the runner-up at the tournament as a freshman.

Joining Bard near the top of the leaderboard is UVA junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) who posted scores of 70 and 68 to stand in seventh place at 2-under 138. Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) shot even part 140 (71-69) and is in 12th place. Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) finished at 146 (71-75) and is in 26th place. Senior Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) is in 56h place at 149 (78-71).

The South Carolina duo of Matthew NeSmith and Will Miles share the overall lead at 6-under 134.

The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday with teams teeing off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
