Cavaliers Finish Fourth at Linger Longer Invitational

The No. 21 Virginia men’s golf team shot 3-over 291 during the final round of the Linger Longer Invitational to place fourth in the 13-team field. The Cavaliers finished at 3-under 861. No. 12 Alabama took the team title at 12-under 852 while Augusta and No. 2 Georgia tied for second at 855. The tournament took place at the Great Waters Golf Course in Greensboro, Ga.
UVA was led by junior Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.), who tied for fourth place at 6-under 210. Bard shot 1-under 71 during Tuesday’s final round. It marked the fifth time this season he has placed in the top-five of a tournament.
The next time Bard plays a competitive round will be at The Masters. He earned an invitational to one of golf’ Major Championships by finishing as the runner-up at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Championship.
Virginia junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) also turned in a top-10 finish, placing eighth at 3-under 213. Stanger shot 76 during the final round after sharing the tournament lead after 36 holes. It was Stanger’s fourth top-10 showing this year.
Cavalier freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.) placed 38th at 6-over 222. He also shot 76 on Tuesday. Freshman Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) tied teammate Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) for 41st place at 223. Both players posted final round scores of 72.
UVA senior Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.), who competed as an individual, placed 70th at 240.
Georgia’s Lee McCoy captured medalist honors at 9-under 207.
The Cavaliers wrap up the regular-season portion of their schedule April 16-17 when they play at NC State’s Wolfpack Invitational.
