Hoos Stake Eight-Shot Lead to Open Bryan National

Browns Summit, N.C. – The 20th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team got off to a hot start in defense of its Bryan National Collegiate title. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 289 Friday at the Bryan Park Champions Course in Browns Summit, N.C. to finish the first day of play eight strokes better than second place South Carolina and Notre Dame.
A total of four UVA players ended the first 18 holes of play among the top-10 on the leaderboard.
Virginia won the team trophy last year when it defeated Wake Forest in a two-hole playoff.
UVA senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) is tied for second place at 1-under 71. Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) is tied for fourth at even par 72. Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is tied for sixth at 73 along with freshman teammate Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.).
Cavalier freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) is in 33rd place after shooting 77. Sophomore Maho Hayakawa (Lake Mary, Fla.), who is competing as an individual, is in 62nd place after posting a score of 80.
East Carolina’s Nico Engstroem Skaug recorded the best first-round score, shooting 2-under 70.
Virginia, Notre Dame and South Carolina will tee off starting at 10 a.m. from the first tee during Saturday’s second round. The tournament runs thru Sunday. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
