No. 3 Virginia Tallies a 6-1 Win at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia men’s tennis team (17-3, 7-1 ACC) earned a 6-1 victory at No. 75 Duke (11-11, 4-5 ACC) on Sunday (April 3) at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Cavaliers won the doubles point with a dominant 6-2 victory by junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) at No. 2 followed quickly by a 6-3 victory from junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) playing on the No. 3 court.
Duke tied the match when Josh Devine won what would be the Blue Devils’ lone point with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Aragone at No. 5 singles, but senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) put the Cavaliers back ahead moments later by wrapping up his match at No. 1. Shane had won his first set against No. 19 Nicholas Alvarez, 6-3, but dropped his second 6-1. Shane finished off his match with a 6-0 victory in the third set. Junior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) rebounded from a 6-4 first-set loss to Adrian Chamdani with 6-2 and 6-0 victories in his final two sets. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) clinched the UVA victory by winning his No. 4 singles match 7-6 (6), 6-3, putting the Cavaliers ahead 4-1.
Altamirano, playing at No. 2, won his first set 6-1 but dropped his second, 3-6, before finishing off Catalin Mateas 6-4 in the third set. Kwiatkowski opened his match at No. 3 against Vincetn Lin by winning his first set in a tiebreaker, 7-1, before dropping his second set, 6-4. Kwiatkowski closed out the contest with a 6-2 victory in his third set.
The Cavaliers remain on the road, playing a midweek match at No. 11 Florida on Wednesday, April 6, at 5 p.m. before going to No. 31 Georgia Tech on Friday, April 8 and Clemson on Sunday, April 10. Virginia will be back at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville on Friday, April 15, hosting No. 6 Wake Forest at 3 p.m.
