No. 3 Virginia Wins 5-2 at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (19-3, 8-1 ACC) earned a 5-2 victory at No. 31 Georgia Tech (14-6, 7-3 ACC) on Friday (April 8) at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta, Ga.
“We are very proud of the guys today as this was a total team effort against a really impressive Georgia Tech team,” said Virginia assistant coach Dustin Taylor. “To come out with the energy that the guys did in the doubles point after a tough and physical match Wednesday night in Florida was awesome to see and really set the tone for the entire match.”
The Cavaliers opened the match by winning the doubles point after senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and junior Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) picked up a 6-4 at No. 1 followed by a 6-3 victory by junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) at No. 2.
Junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Ca.) picked up a quick 6-1, 6-3 victory over Andrew Li at No. 5 to open singles and put the Cavaliers up 2-0. Corinteli followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Michael Kay at No. 6. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) clinched the victory with a 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 4 over Nathan Rakitt. Sophomore Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) added a fifth point for Virginia with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Cole Fiegel at No. 3.
Georgia Tech picked up two points when Shane, currently ranked No. 7, fell to No. 11 Christopher Eubanks 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 on the top court and No. 6 Kwiatkowski fell 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to unranked Carlos Benito at No. 2.
The Cavaliers finish off their current 10-day roadtrip by taking on Clemson (13-11, 4-5 ACC) on Sunday, April 10 at 11 a.m. in Clemson, S.C.
“We are really looking forward to facing Clemson on Sunday,” Taylor said. “The Tigers have really improved over the course of the year and will provide us with another great opportunity to keep things moving in the right direction.”
