UVA Golfers Open NCAA Regional Play in Fifth Place

Franklin, Tenn. – The No. 26 Virginia men’s golf team is tied for fifth place after the first round of the NCAA Regional at Vanderbilt’s Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. The Cavaliers opened play at the 54-hole tournament by shooting 3-under 285. The top five teams from the six regional sites move on to the NCAA Championships.
Second-ranked Texas grabbed the regional’s early lead by shooting 20-under 268. East Carolina is second at 9-under 279 while No. 23 Washington and No. 47 Kennesaw State are tied for third at 283. Host Vanderbilt is tied with the Cavaliers at 285.
UVA was led by junior Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) who shot 4-under 68 and finished the day tied for sixth place. Freshman Thomas Walsh (High Point, N.C.), UVA’s top finisher at the ACC Championships, posted the Hoos’ other under-round score, finishing the day at 1-under 71. He is in 24th place.
Sophomore Danny Walker (Bradenton, Fla.) is one shot behind Walsh in 26th place. Ashton Poole (Charlotte, N.C.) rounded out UVA scorers with a 74 while Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) played the first round at 5-over 77.
Texas’ Doug Ghim shot 8-under 64 to hold a one-shot lead over the next three players on the leaderboard.
The Cavaliers will be paired with Kennesaw State and Vanderbilt during Tuesday’s second round. Those three schools tee off starting at 8:20 a.m. from the No. 1 tee.
