UVA Opens NCAA Championships in Eighth Place

Eugene, Ore. – The No. 15 Virginia women’s golf team is tied for eighth place after the opening day of play at the 2016 NCAA Championships at the Eugene (Ore.) Country Club. The Cavaliers shot 5-over 293. Oklahoma State leads the 24-team field after shooting 4-under 284 to open the tournament.
Senior Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) led the Cavaliers by shooting even par 72. Coughlin managed three birdies and one eagle as UVA played in the morning wave of teams. She finished the day in 29th place.
Freshman Anna Redding (Concord, N.C.) shot 1-over 73 and is in 39th place. Junior Lauren Diaz-Yi and freshman Morgan Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz.) are tied for 55th place at 74. UVA senior Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.) is in 69th place after shooting 75.
UVA posted the best opening round score of the five ACC teams in the field. Florida State is tied for 12th at 295 while North Carolina is tied for 18th at 298. Miami is tied for 21st at 299 and Duke is in 21st place at 299.
Last year’s NCAA Champion, Stanford, shot 7-over 295 and is tied for 12th place. Top-ranked Alabama is 23rd at 12-over 300. No. 20 Oregon, playing on its home course, is in 15th place at 9-over 297.
The Cavaliers second round will start at noon PT. The 24-team field will be trimmed to 15 teams and top nine individuals not on those teams following Sunday’s third round of competition. After the medal play concludes with 72 holes and the individual champion is crowned, the top eight teams will advance to match play.
