Following regulation, the two teams went to a shootout with the Mountaineers winning the shootout 7-5.
The Cavaliers had the edge offensively, out-shooting West Virginia 15-8 for the match, while the Mountaineer defense came up with seven saves on the afternoon.
West Virginia got on the board first, finding the net in the third minute with a goal in past the post off a shot from just outside the top right corner of the six-yard box.
The Cavaliers got two solid chances in the first 20 minutes of play with freshmen nearly converting in both chances. Taylor Ziemer’s (Santa Rosa, Calif.) shot from the near side was just wide in the 12th minute, while Zoe Morse (East Lansing, Mich.) hit the near post with her shot in the 20th minute.
Virginia broke through in the 43rd minute of play when McCool took advantage of a West Virginia turnover at the top of the box and found the net to tie the score 1-1.
The second half saw the Cavaliers again hold an edge in shots at 7-6. Virginia got several chances to take the lead, but the Mountaineer defense answered the challenge each time with the West Virginia keeper saving four shots, including a breakaway two-on-one by the Cavaliers in the 87th minute, to keep the score tied at the end of regulation.
