CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia men’s tennis freshman Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) was one of six players named to Sweden’s Davis Cup team that will be competing in the Europe/Asia Group I Relegation Round matches against The Netherlands on Sept. 16-18 in Bastad, Sweden.
Swedish head coach Fredrik Rosengren has nominated Elia Ymer, Michael Ymer, Isak Arvidsson and Fred Simonsson to represent Sweden in the tie against The Netherlands with Söderlund and Markus Eriksson also being named to the team. Changes in the nomination can be made up until the draw, which will be held next Thursday, Sept. 15.
Söderlund is the third-highest ranked singles player in his native Sweden, currently ranked No. 439. Söderlund, at 19 years old, is the second-youngest player nominated to the youth-oriented team, next to 17-year-old Michael Ymer. Eriksson is the oldest member of the squad at 26 years old.
The winner of Netherlands/Sweden will retain their position in Euro/Africa Zone Group I while the loser will take on Israel in a crucial Round II relegation match in October.
Söderlund is competing this week at the Donalda $25K Futures Tournament in Toronto, Canada, before joining the rest of the team for final training in Bastad.
Update – Sept. 11
Due to illness, Söderlund did not join the team in Bastad. He was replaced by Milos Sekulic on the six-player roster.
