WACO, Texas – The Virginia volleyball team (3-8) fell 3-0 (25-10-25-15, 25-16) to Washington State (10-1) on Saturday afternoon in the Baylor Classic at the Ferrell Center.
Virginia was out-hit by Washington State, .363-0.71. The Cougars finished with 11.0 blocks to five for the Cavaliers and led with eight service aces to one. Kyra Holt had 11 kills to lead WSU.
Redshirt junior Alex Thorson (Spring, Texas) led UVA with 11 kills. Freshman Chino Anukwuem (East Hanover, N.J.) had a team-high three blocks and senior Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) led the back line with nine digs.
Virginia fell in the first set 25-10 to Washington State. Seniors Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Thorson each led UVA with three kills in the opening set. The Cougars continued to control the match with a 25-15 win in the second set as Thorson tallied five kills to lead Virginia.
The Cavaliers used a 5-0 run in the third set to take a 7-4 lead as Washington State called timeout. The Cougars tied the set up at 7-7 and the teams traded points with three more ties until a 4-0 run give Virginia a 13-10 advantage. The run included kills by Kole and freshman Kat Young (Chantilly, Va.), a block by Anukwuem and senior Jasmine Burton along with an ace for freshman Kelsey Miller (Crestwood, Ky.) The Cavaliers were leading 15-12, but WSU came back to take the lead and went on to win the set 25-16.
Virginia closes out the Baylor Classic tonight against College of Charleston at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT.
