Mercer Falls In ITA Atlantic Regional Semifinals

NORFOLK, Va. – Junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) ended her run at the ITA Atlantic Regional in the semifinals on Tuesday (Oct. 18), falling to Marie Faure of William & Mary in three sets.
Mercer and Faure split the first two sets before battling to the end in the third as Faure defeated the Cavalier junior 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
On her run to the semifinals, Mercer posted four consecutive victories, including three in straight sets. In her quarterfinal match against Katia Bilk of Penn State, Mercer dropped her first set, but fought off a match point in the second set and claimed the third set to power into Tuesday’s semifinal match.
The event is being played at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center at Old Dominion.
The winners of the singles and doubles brackets at the ITA Atlantic Regional earn automatic berths in the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate played at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. in November.
Virginia will return to action the weekend of Oct. 28 at the Puerto Rico Team Invitational, a three-day tournament in Palma del Mar, Puerto Rico.
