Rommel Picks Up Third ECAC Title to Lead Hoos

Annapolis, Md. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving team finished the final day of the ECAC Championships by winning four more events to bring their three-day total to 12 titles.
On the women’s side, junior Jessie Gvozdas (Henrico, Va.) started the finals by winning the 1650 free in a time of 16:43.60. Senior Maddy Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) took second place at 16:44.01
Junior Dina Rommel (East Amherst, N.Y.) captured the 100 free title with a time of 50.18 while senior Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.) placed sixth at 51.90.
Sophomore Peyton Baldwin (Newport News, Va.) claimed the 200 fly championship with a mark of 2:03.05 while Gvozdas was second at 2:03.84
Baldwin was sixth in the 200 back at 2:01.13 and sophomore Anna Dickinson (Virginia Beach, Va.) was fifth in the 200 breast (2:20.81) to round out UVA’s scoring.
Freshman Jason Quinn’s (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) and junior Omer Tara (Istanbul, Turkey) gave the Cavalier men a one-two sweep of the 1650 free. Quinn took the gold medal with a time of 15:20.97 while Tara earned the silver at 15:25.25.
Three Hoos rounded out the scoring for UVA. Freshman Jacob Wells (Henrico, Va.) was the runner-up in the 200 breast (1:58.17), senior John Denning (Chesapeake, Va.) placed fourth in the 200 fly (1:46.11) and senior Robert Leasure (Louisville, Ky.) was fifth in the 200 back (1:49.11).
The UVA women finished the meet fourth with 348.5 points. The Virginia men placed fifth at the event with 299 points.
