FSU Completes Sweep of Softball

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 1 Florida State (32-1-1, 12-0 ACC) took the final game of a three-game series, 10-0 against Virginia (11-20, 2-10 ACC). Seminole starting pitcher Jessica Burroughs allowed just two baserunners and did not allow a hit in her 16th win of the season.
Burroughs hit the first batter of the game and then proceeded to sit down the next 11 batters in-a-row before walking Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) to lead off the fifth inning. Burroughs struck out 11, her third-highest single-game total this season. The no-no capped a two-win weekend for Burroughs who struck out seven in Friday night’s series opener.
Unlike the previous two games, Florida State managed to score in its first turn at the plate. A three-run home run by Jessica Warren in the top of the first gave the Seminoles a quick, 3-0 lead. The long ball was her ninth of the season, the second most in the ACC. The Seminoles scored three more runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. Alex Powers and Cali Harrod were credited with RBI hits in the frame.
After being held scoreless in back-to-back innings by Virginia starting pitcher Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.), Florida State added a run in the top of the fifth on a home run by Carsyn Gordon to extend the lead to 7-0. The solo shot was Gordon’s second of the season and second of the series.
A three-run rally that sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the sixth, clinched the run-rule victory for Florida State.
The Cavaliers will begin a 10-game stint away from Charlottesville on Tuesday at Longwood. The non-conference doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m. in Farmville.
