No. 29 Virginia Falls At No. 4 North Carolina
March 26, 2017
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 29 Virginia women’s tennis team (7-7, 5-2 ACC) won the doubles point, but couldn’t push through against a tough singles lineup in a 5-2 loss at No. 4 North Carolina (20-1, 7-0 ACC) on Sunday (March 26).
The Cavaliers won the doubles point and got a singles win from junior Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia) for Virginia’s scoring on the afternoon. The two points scored by the Cavaliers is the most by a team in ACC play against North Carolina this season.
The Cavaliers got on the board first, securing the doubles point with a pair of victories on courts one and two. After dropping the doubles match on court three, Virginia got a 6-4 win from the duo of Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) and Radosavljevic on court two. The Cavaliers then locked up the doubles point as the duo of Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) won 6-4 on court one.
North Carolina had the answer in singles competition, however, picking up a straight-set win on court six to get on the board before also picking up a straight-set victory on court three to take the lead. An injury forced retirement by Virginia on court five to put the home team on top 3-1 before North Carolina would secure the win with a victory on court one.
Two matches split sets with Mercer going to a super tiebreak on court two and Radosavljevic going to a super tiebreak on court four. The Tar Heels won the point on court two with a victory in the super tiebreak, while Radosavljevic secured the second point of the afternoon for Virginia with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 win on court four.
Virginia will return to action on Friday (March 31) when the Cavaliers return home to host Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
