No. 33 Virginia Falls In Tight Match At Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. – The home team grabbed the doubles point and rallied in singles to secure victory on Friday (April 7) as the No. 33 Virginia women’s tennis team (7-9, 5-4 ACC) dropped a 4-3 decision at Clemson (9-10, 4-6 ACC).
It is the first match of a five-game road trip for the Cavaliers.
Virginia got singles wins from sophomore Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) and freshmen Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.). It wasn’t enough to secure the victory, however, as the Tigers rallied for a three-set victory on court six to take the match.
Clemson won the doubles point to get on the scoreboard first, picking up victories on courts two and three, respectively.
The Cavaliers got on the board in singles as Johanson made quick work of her opponent on court one. The freshman, ranked No. 43 in singles, defeated Marie Leduc 6-2, 6-1 for the first point of the day for Virginia.
Clemson answered with a win on court two, before Favero would pull of her straight-set win on court five. The freshman defeated Constanza Gorches 6-4, 6-3 to again pull the overall match score even at 2-2.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead with a win on court four before clinching the match by rallying for a three-set win on court six.
Virginia will return to action at 11 a.m. on Sunday (April 9) on the road at No. 6 Georgia Tech.
