No. 33 Virginia Falls At No. 6 Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – The No. 33 Virginia women’s tennis team (7-10, 5-5 ACC) fell on the road Sunday (April 9), dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 6 Georgia Tech (20-2, 10-0 ACC) at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
It is only the second time this season that the Cavaliers have been shut out and only the first time in ACC competition.
Georgia Tech took the lead, grabbing the doubles point with a pair of wins on courts one and three, respectively. The match on court two was unfinished tied 3-3. On court one, the No. 79 doubles pairing of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones defeated the Virginia duo of Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine) by a score of 6-0. The court three victory clinched the point as Luca Fabian and Nami Otsuka defeated the Cavalier duo of Hunter Bleser (New Braunfels, Texas) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.) by a score of 6-1.
The Yellow Jackets extended the lead with straight-set victories on courts five and six before clinching the victory with the win on court three.
Georgia Tech’s Otsuka defeated Favero 6-1, 6-2 on court five before Fabian defeated the Cavaliers’ Bleser 6-2, 6-4 on court six. The Yellow Jackets clinched the victory on court three as No. 76 Hourigan defeated Kelley 7-6, 6-1.
The remaining three singles matches went unfinished. Johanson, ranked No. 43 for Virginia, had won the first set on court one over No. 48 Rasheeda McAdoo, while the Cavaliers’ Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade Serbia) had split sets on court four with Jones. Junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.), ranked No. 116 in singles, trailed No. 101 Johnnise Renaud of Georgia Tech in the second set after dropping the first set.
Virginia will return to action next weekend, traveling to play a pair of matches on Friday (April 14) and a single match on Sunday (April 16). The Cavaliers will face Duquesne and Pittsburgh on Friday, before facing Louisville on Sunday.
