No. 3 Virginia Wins 4-0 at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3 Virginia men’s tennis team (25-1, 11-1 ACC) closed out the regular season with a 4-0 victory at No. 32 Florida State (16-10, 6-6 ACC) on Sunday (April 23) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Cavaliers clinched the doubles point and won three singles matches in straight sets to close out the regular season on an eight-match win streak. It was also the eighth sweep for the Cavaliers in conference matches this season.
Senior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and junior Collin Altamirano (Sacramento, Calif.) started the match with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 doubles. After Florida State won at No. 1, seniors Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and Alexander Ritschard (Zurich, Switzerland) clinched the doubles point by winning a deuce point on court two that closed out their 7-5 victory.
In singles, Kwiatkowski and junior Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) both cruised to victories at No. 2 and No. 6 singles to put UVA up 3-0. Freshman Carl Soderlund (Stockholm, Sweden) clinched the victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alex Knaff on court four.
Courts one, three and five singles all had their first sets decided in tiebreakers with Florida State winning on the first two and Aragone prevailing 10-8 on five to take his first set over Terrance Whitehurst. All three courts were abandoned when Söderlund clinched the match.
The postseason begins next week with the 2017 ACC Men’s Tennis Championship, taking place April 26- 30 at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College in Rome, Ga. The Cavaliers will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will have a double-bye into the quarterfinals, taking on the winner of the second-round match between 10-seed Notre Dame and 7-seed Louisville on Friday, April 28 at 10 a.m. Saturday’s semifinals and Sunday’s championship match will stream live online as ACC Network Extra contests on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
