No. 7 UVA Holds Lead through Day Two of ACC Championships

Atlanta, Ga. -The Virginia men’s track and field team held its lead through day two (May 13) of the ACC Championships at George C. Griffin Track and Field Facility in Atlanta, Ga.
The Cavaliers ranks atop the competition field with 80 points. Duke is second with 39 points while Virginia Tech and Florida State are tied for third with 34 points.
In a 22-point event for UVA, senior Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) won gold for the third consecutive year in the shot put. He recorded a distance of 20.27m (66-6). Redshirt sophomore Oghenakpobo Efekoro’s (Brooklyn, N.Y.) effort of 19.74m (64-9.25), earned him a silver medal in the event. Sophomore Nace Plesko (Ljubljana, Slovenia) finished fifth with a mark of 18.15m (59-6.75). All three earned All-ACC honors.
The event was Mihaljevic’s sixth ACC shot put medal (indoor and outdoor).
Redshirt sophomore Jack Lint (Westerville, Ohio) recorded 7,263 points in the decathlon to finish second in the event and earn first-team All-ACC. Freshman Jack Claiborne (Johannesburg, South Africa) battled to move into scoring position for the Cavaliers. He finished seventh with a personal-best performance of 6,296 points.
In the long jump, freshman Jordan Scott (Portmore, Jamaica) finished fourth with an effort of 7.41m (24-3.75).
Redshirt junior Jeff Jernigan (DeKalb, Ga.) finished fourth in the polevault, clearing a mark of 5.07m (16-7.5). Freshman Sam Young (Lewes, Del.) finished sixth with an effort of 4.87m (15-11.75).
“The guys are taking care of business,” head coach Bryan Fetzer said. “You can only do what you can do. That is what we had talked about all year and this weekend. Super excited for them as they are giving themselves the best chance they can to have the best success.”
Sophomore Charles Bowman (Harrisburg, Pa.) will compete in the finals of the 110m hurdles after qualifying for the event with a time of 14.47. He is seeded eighth in Sunday’s finals (5:50 p.m.).
Senior Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) finished seventh in the 400 meter prelims with a time of 47.63. He will compete on Sunday at 6:10 p.m.
The ACC Championships will conclude tomorrow (May 14) with action beginning at 2 p.m. ACC Network Extra will stream events beginning at 5:00 p.m.
