June 27, 2017
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Five members of the UVA men’s lacrosse team were named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic Men’s Lacrosse Team, announced ACC Commissioner John Swofford. Rising junior midfielder Ryan Conrad, rising senior attackman Mike D’Amario, rising senior defenseman Scott Hooper, rising sophomore attackman Michael Kraus and graduate defenseman Tanner Scales all were honored on the academic team. It is the second career nod for D’Amario, Hooper and Scales, who were each on the team last year. It is the first career honor for Conrad and Kraus.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Conrad (Timonium, Md.) is undeclared in his major. He led UVA with 63 ground balls, which is the most in the nation by a non-defensive player or faceoff specialist. The midfielder finished the year with 17 goals and 11 assists and has caused 10 turnovers. Conrad was the only sophomore named to the All-ACC team and was named a third-team USILA All-American.
D’Amario (Niskayuna, N.Y.) is an English major. He was second on the team with 32 goals and third on the team with 43 points. D’Amario was ACC Offensive Player of the Week and EPOCH/US Lacrosse National Player of the Week for his seven-goal performance against Drexel. The seven goals against Drexel tie him with eight other Cavaliers for fourth-most in a game in program history.
Hooper (Wakefield, R.I.) is a history major. He led UVA with 35 caused turnovers and was not penalized the entire season. Hooper’s 2.33 caused turnovers per game ranked No. 1 in the ACC and No. 5 in the NCAA. Hooper also picked up 42 ground balls, which ranked fifth on the team. He also dished out one assist against Notre Dame.
Kraus (New Canaan, Conn.) is undeclared in his major. He led UVA with 34 goals and 56 points. Kraus’ 56 points rank No. 2 all-time at UVA among freshmen. His 34 goals rank No. 3 in the ACC. Kraus was the only freshman on the All-ACC team and the seventh Cavalier all-time to earn All-ACC honors as a freshman since the league started putting together an All-ACC team in 1977. Kraus was also named ACC Freshman of the Year. He was also named an honorable mention USILA All-American.
Scales (Denver, Colo.), a graduate student in 2017, worked on a master’s degree in education. Scales was named a USILA Scholar All-American in 2017. He picked up 38 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers in 2017. Scales also scored his only career point on an assist at Johns Hopkins. Late last month Scales was selected in the seventh round (56th overall) in the 2017 MLL Draft by his hometown Denver Outlaws. Scales leaves UVA after playing in 59 career games with 53 starts on defense. He picked up 156 career ground balls and caused 75 career turnovers.
