Virginia Men Finish Third at NCAA Southeast Regionals

Earlysville, Va.- The Virginia men’s cross country team finished third with 130 points at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships on Friday (Nov. 10) at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.

No. 7 Furman paced the field, finishing first with 55 points, followed by No. 9 Virginia Tech in second place with 109 points. Both teams automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky.

“We are obviously disappointed that we just ended five-straight years of qualifying for the NCAA meet,” men’s cross country head coach Pete Watson said. “I thought our top-four guys ran very well today. They did what was needed and gave us a shot. Lachlan (Cook) and Brent (Demarest) continue to have great results, and show leadership and consistency. I am also proud of the way Alex Corbett ran today. When we step back and evaluate the year, we just didn’t take full advantage of opportunities.”

Sophomore Lachlan Cook (Brisbane, Australia) led the Cavaliers, finishing sixth with a time of 29:12.6, while senior Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) finished seventh with a time of 29:22.6. Cook and Demarest earned USTFCCCA All-Southeast Region honors for their efforts.

Senior Chase Weaverling (Darnestown, Md.) was the next Cavalier to cross the finish line, placing 26th with a time of 29:55.5. Sophomore Alex Corbett (Burke, Va.) and redshirt sophomore Ari Klau (West Hartford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring runs, respectively. Corbett finished 35th with a time of 30:16.8, while Klau finished 57th with a time of 30:43.3.
