Virginia Diving Concludes Day One of Frank Elm Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J.- The Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams finished the first day of competition at the Frank Elm Invitational on Friday (Nov. 17) at the Rutgers Aquatics Center in Piscataway, N.J.

The Cavalier women had three divers advance into the finals of the 1-meter dive as sophomore Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) led the team with a third-place finish and a score of 291.55. Freshman Jocelyn Porter (Cornelius, N.C.) finished fourth with a score of 287.85, while junior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) finished eighth with a score of 255.85.

Senior Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) topped the consolation heat, finishing ninth overall with a score of 273.95.

On the men’s side, freshman Tristan Gess (Lakewood, Colo.) finished sixth in the 3-meter dive. He recorded a score of 260.35.

“Great day for us today,” head diving coach Jason Glorius said. “Corey (Johnson) squeaked into the consolations, finishing 16th in the prelims, then proceeded to win consolations with her best 1-meter event ever. In the finals, Tristan (Gess) had his best 3-meter event, while Jocelyn (Porter) had her best 1-meter event.

“Sydney (Dusel) did what Sydney does, and was solid. She nailed a few dives, and was really focused and competed well. Kylie (Towbin) completed a back two and a half on the 1-meter for the first time and earned five and a half’s. I’ve never seen another female do that dive, let alone complete it. She also completed a gainer two and a half for a six and a half score. She missed a few easy ones, but doing well on the hard ones was more important. We will continue to focus on the process and get better.”

The Cavaliers will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of competition at the Frank Elm Invitational in Piscataway, N.J. The preliminary rounds for the women’s 3-meter dive and men’s 1-meter dive will begin at noon.
