Ivory, Torres Named To Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI Team
Dec. 18, 2017
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A pair of freshmen were honored by Top Drawer Soccer when the publication named goalkeeper Laurel Ivory (Surfside, Fla.) and forward/midfielder Taryn Torres (Frisco, Texas) to its Freshman Best XI team. Both were first-team selections.
The duo helped lead Virginia to a 13-6-4 record on the season and a final ranking of No. 9 in the national polls after advancing to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. It marked the 13th consecutive season for Virginia to advance to at least the Sweet 16 as the Cavaliers made a 24th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. That streak of 24 straight NCAA Tournament appearances is the third-longest active streak in the nation.
Ivory started all 23 matches for the Cavaliers this season, playing 2,143 minutes in goal. In that time, she posted 10 shutouts – nine of them solo – and allowed only 17 goals on the season for a 0.71 goal against average. No team on the season scored more than two goals in a game against the Cavaliers.
Torres tied for the team lead in goals, scoring eight goals on the season, and finished second in points with 17, as she added one assist on the year. She hit two game-winning goals, lifting the Cavaliers to victory against Liberty and Miami. Torres turned in her first multiple-goal game at Pittsburgh. She was named an All-ACC Third Team and All-Freshman selection by the league’s coaches.
