Virginia Completes the First Day of Liberty Kickoff

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Virginia women’s track and field team completed the first day of competition at the Liberty Kickoff on Friday (Jan. 26) at the Liberty Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg, Va.
Senior Bridget Guy (Greensburg, Pa.) led the team, finishing first in the pole vault with a height of 4.10m (13’5.25″). Senior Katie Freix (Chantilly, Va.) placed fifth in the event with a mark of 3.65m (11’11.75″).
“Bridget competed like a veteran today,” assistant coach Mario Wilson said. ” She came in with a plan and executed it to near perfection. She was very close to setting an indoor personal record at 13 feet, 9 inches.”
Brittany Jones (Bloomfield, Conn.) finished 12th overall in the weight throw, recording a mark of 15.67m (51’5.0″). Her performance placed second on UVA’s all-time freshman records list. Junior Jade Baker (North Richland Hills, Texas) finished 17th in the event. She recorded a mark of 15.01m (49’3.0″).
“Solid performance by our ladies in the weight throw,” assistant coach Martin Maric said. “Both Jade and Brittany ended up with a personal best, which is always something to strive for. We are where we want to be at this point of the indoor season.”
The Cavaliers will conclude the competition tomorrow with events beginning at 9:30 a.m.
