Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia (6-7) split a pair of games in Saturday action at the UNCG Invitational as the Hoos toppled App State, 2-1, before falling to UNCG.

Hayley Busby (Phoenix, Ariz.) went 2-for-2 in the opening game, scoring both runs for Virginia in the victory. The perfect game also included her first career home run at UVA.

GAME ONE | VIRGINIA 2 – APP STATE 1

Junior right-hander Lacy Smith (Lancaster, Pa.) spun a complete-game gem, holding Appalachian State (4-9) to just a single run as Virginia (6-6) captured its second consecutive win over the Mountaineers in 2-1 fashion.

Busby lifted her first career home run to break the scoreless draw in the bottom of the third inning. The freshman shortstop took a 0-1 offering from App State starter Kenzie Longanecker and sent a line drive screeching over the left field wall. She would finish the game 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Busby sparked the Hoos’ second tally of the game as she set the table with a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth. She would move to second on a wild pitch before Kate Covington (McLean, Va.) drew a two-out walk to extend the inning.

Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) extended her hitting streak to 11 games with a two-out RBI single through the right side. In an 0-2 count, the senior drove a ground ball into right field, allowing Busby to race home from second for the 2-0 lead.

App State broke up the shutout in the top of the seventh inning as Alisha Josey jumped a two-out offering for a solo home run. Smith (3-2) responded with a strikeout to seal the win.

For Smith, the complete game marks her second consecutive after going the distance for a 2-1 win over George Mason last week at the Madeira Beach Invitational. The back-to-back seven-inning efforts are the first consecutive complete games in Smith’s career.

GAME TWO | UNCG 8 – VIRGINIA 0 (5)

Stephanie Bryden (3-1) threw a no-hitter for UNCG as the Hoos faltered in the nightcap.

UNCG struck first as the Spartans capitalized on a first-inning error to plate an unearned run. The Spartans added four in the bottom of the third to break the game open. A leadoff walk and three-straight singles scored a run and chased starter Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) from the circle.

Tabby Dabney (Mechanicsville, Va.) entered in relief, allowing a double that plated two more runs and a sac fly that made it a 5-0 score. All five runs were charged to Osherow (3.4), four of which were earned.

UNCG added another pair of runs in the fourth as three hit batters, a walk and a single combined to produce the damage. With a 7-0 lead, the Spartans used a pair of hit batters, a walk and a single to earn the 8-0 victory in five.
