Feb. 28, 2018
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ÃÆ’Æ‘¢ÃƒÆ’¢’¬” Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run for Virginia (6-10), but Campbell (8-8) used five home runs of its own to down the Cavaliers, 16-2, in the home opener at The Park.
Rachel McCollum and Lizabeth McCurry each launched a pair of home runs for the Camels, combining for 10 RBI to drive the Campbell victory. Hannah Jones added the fifth long ball for the Camels, who plated 12 of their 16 runs via the home run.
After McCollum’s two run shot off Virginia starter Erika Osherow (Darien, Conn.) in the top of the first, the Hoos cut the lead in half thanks to Davis’ solo home run to lead things off for the Cavaliers.
A pair of doubles in the third would add two more runs for the Camels, who chased Osherow (3-5) in the frame. The Camels would go on to score three in the fourth on McCurry’s first home run to right to make it a 7-2 advantage.
Campbell iced the game with a pair in the sixth on McCollum’s second home run of the day before adding a seven-run seventh on the strength of two more homers.
Virginia scored its second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth as Hayley Busby (Phoenix, Ariz.) grounded out to the pitcher to push across Kate Covington (McLean, Va.) and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Osherow took the loss in the circle for the Cavaliers, allowing four runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Megan Richards (5-3) earned the win for Campbell going four innings and allowing two runs.
