Towbin Wins 3-meter Dive at NCAA Zone Diving

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Junior Kylie Towbin (New Canaan, Conn.) paced the field of the women’s 3-meter dive at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships on Tuesday (March 6) at the Rutgers Aquatic Center. Towbin and sophomore Sydney Dusel (Naperville, Ill.) earned berths to the NCAA Championships in the event after finishing first and third, respectively.
Towbin recorded a 12-dive score of 687.40 to place first in the 3-meter dive. Her performance in the finals set a UVA record with a score of 364.15. She recorded a score of 323.25 in the preliminary round.
Dusel qualified for her second event of the meet, finishing third in the 3-meter with a 12-dive score of 629.65. She captured a score of 307.25 in the preliminary round and a career-best score of 322.4 in the finals.
“It was an awesome day for us today,” head diving coach Jason Glorius said. “The divers really competed well and had some fun doing it. Kylie really had a great meet.”
In addition to Towbin and Dusel, the remaining three Cavalier divers advanced to the finals of their respective events.
Freshman Jocelyn Porter (Cornelius, N.C.) finished 11th in the women’s 3-meter dive with a final score of 556.15, while senior Corey Johnson (Ambler, Pa.) placed 13th in the event with a score of 553.20.
Sophomore Bryce Shelton (Vienna, Va.) finished 11th in the men’s 1-meter board, recording a score of 607.60.
The top six finalists in the women’s 3-meter dive and the men’s 1-meter dive qualified for the NCAA Championships. The women’s national championships will be held March 14-17, while the men’s championships will be held March 21-24.
